The creative process

About

Kate Watters is a textile and paper collage artist, botanist and farmer-florist. She grew up playing in Vermont forests and moved to Arizona after college where she promptly fell in love with the desert. She worked for 20 years in service to plant communities in the Grand Canyon and across the Colorado Plateau and always carried a spiral bound watercolor journal. Kate creates wedding florals, herbal medicine and hosts flower workshops through her company Agave Maria Botanicals.

Through her artwork, Kate stitches and glues together stories of plants, ecology and our human connection to the natural world. She has developed land-based artist residencies and workshops and co-curated exhibits with scientists and artists to advocate for pollinators and public lands. She is currently working on a series exploring chakra energy centers in the body and the plants that balance them.
